Traveling Solo With Public Transportation

I love traveling solo and have logged many more miles traveling by myself than with companions.  My first solo trip in 2006 to Santa Fe was such a success that I am now an addict.  Since then I have traveled several times to the southwest, and will continue to travel there, but I am also exploring exciting destinations in other regions.

I live in a major metropolis with an extensive bus, ferry, rail, and subway system so I’ve never owned a car, and have thus learned to travel without one.  When selecting travel destinations I choose those that are walkable or have public transportation (PT).  For excursions out of town I rely on local tours companies, which either pick up from hotels or have pick up points in readily accessible downtown locations.  I have even rented bikes as an alternative to PT.

PT is an inexpensive and efficient means of navigating.  For the solo traveler who doesn’t drive - like myself, it is a necessity in terms of both of cost and logistics.  I hope others will be encouraged to leave their cars behind, and for those that don’t drive - there’s no stopping us.
